During our final BOD meeting of 2022, Caring Hearts and Voices reviewed our events and budget for the year and looking forward, and things are not looking good.
The music world is hurting. People are hurting.
- Musicians are struggling to make ends meet, and struggling to utilize music as self-care. The cost of housing, food, and medical expenses continues to rise while jobs that pay livable wages decreases. Music as self-care is expensive and inaccessible.
- Musicians lost their supplemental income from live performances since the beginning of the pandemic, and have not returned in the same capacity. Shows are frequently canceled from illness, poor attendance, and staffing shortages.
- Music supporting venues, such as bars, restaurants, coffee shops, concert halls, needed to cut back or discontinued hiring local musicians. Some are no longer in existence.
- Licensed Music therapists have lost their paid positions in hospitals, as are being replaced by volunteer musicians.
For 2023, we are shifting our focus to supporting those in need through music, by supporting our musicians and small business in this time of need.
We are looking for volunteer musicians interested in:
- Performing in local coffee shops and around the community calm, upbeat, and supportive music.
- Sharing their time and talents to comfort and support members of the community who may not have heard live music in years.
- Showcasing acoustic originals or acoustic covers.
- Musicians who are comfortable with a passive audience who may be working, studying, or having conversations in neighboring tables.
We are not looking for:
- Musicians who perform loud music as this would be distracting to those who may be working, studying, relaxing, or who may want to have conversations.
- Non-musical performers (we love you, however spoken words require an active audience, the intent is to provide calm, comforting coffee shop vibes)
All new volunteers will need to complete the following items prior to their first volunteer session:
- Volunteer Intake Interview (phone)
- Audition (live or recorded)

Volunteer vs Entertainment Performances
- Volunteer Performances are less formal than Entertainment Performances, and do not require formal audience seating. Instead, they are more background or transitional experiences.
- Entertainment Performances have a set time for the audience to gather, sit, and attend; in comparison, members of the community walk past volunteer performers and pause to listen to a song or two before continuing with their day.
- The Music in the Community Performances could be like a cocktail hour at a wedding, or a pianist in a waiting room, or even similar to buskers in busy shopping areas.
- This style of performance takes the pressure off volunteers to create a full setlist and the need for hauling sound equipment.
- This may also make the wait for lunch less stressful for community members who experience difficult times waiting and during transitions.
